JANET Netsight®
JANET Netsight provides visibility of current and historic performance on the JANET network.
Netsight monitors the performance of the JANET backbone, its links to the rest of the Internet, including its connection to LINX (the London INternet eXchange), and the links to all JANET customer sites within regional networks.
The system is available to JANET connected organisations and regional network providers.
Netsight is not an operational network management tool, but provides JANET customers with an invaluable window into network status and performance, as well as supporting JANET(UK)'s own network performance reporting obligations.
Original Netsight
The Original Netsight was developed in-house and deployed in 2002. The service consists of a number of monitoring systems deployed around the JANET network, with the majority hosted locally in the regions. The tool has been popular with organisations and regional network providers alike, however it has now been superseded by New Netsight for the majority of regions.
New Netsight
The initial release of New Netsight offers functionality broadly equivalent to that of the Original Netsight, while deploying the flexible architecture required to support future developments such as the addition of new measurement types.
Additional information on future developments will be posted on the JANET Development pages.
Transition
Users are being transitioned from the Original to the New Netsight system on a region-by-region basis. More details can be found here. Please also see the transition timetable and list of transition frequently asked questions.
